Scoliosis Q & A

What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a spine deformity that causes the spine to curve sideways. There are various forms of scoliosis, the most common being idiopathic (unknown cause) scoliosis and adult degenerative scoliosis.

Idiopathic scoliosis: Often present in young children and adolescents. Symptoms can include back pain, visible deformed spine, posture irregularities such as uneven shoulders, hips or waists.

Adult degenerative scoliosis: Often present in adults due to degeneration of the discs, arthritis of the facet joints and collapse and wedging of the disc spaces. Symptoms often include back pain, numbness or shooting pain down the legs, being stooped forward or difficulty maintaining an upright position.

Aside from the physical consequences of scoliosis, adults and children may also struggle with self-image and self-esteem because of the way the condition alters their appearance.

Is scoliosis treatable?

Treatment isn’t always necessary, especially for mild cases of scoliosis that can often be treated with activity modification, over-the-counter pain medication or physical therapy. The goal for scoliosis treatment is to prevent the condition from progressing and relieving symptoms as there is no cure. Dr. Remi Ajiboye may use bracing or surgery for moderate to severe cases.
