What is spondylolisthesis or slippage?
Spondylolisthesis or slippage is a condition where the disc degenerates resulting in a loss of disc height and instability, causing one vertebra to slip forward over another vertebra below it. The word spondylolisthesis is comprised of two parts: spondylo meaning spine, and listhesis meaning slippage. This condition can cause pinching of the spinal nerves and/or fatigue of the back muscles, and may result in lower back and/or leg pain.
Spondylolisthesis or slippage may lead to the following symptoms:
- Back pain
- Pain that runs down into the hips, buttock or leg, on one side or both sides
- Numbness or tingling down the leg along the nerve pathway
- The feeling of your leg giving out underneath you
- Weakness in the legs
- Abnormal posture
What causes spondylolisthesis or slippage?
A number of conditions can lead to a pinched nerve/sciatica:
- Degenerative disc disease
- Stress fracture
- Traumatic injury from a fall or accident
- Birth defects
What is the typical treatment for spondylolisthesis or slippage?
Dr. Remi Ajiboye designs a personalized treatment plan after speaking with you and conducting a thorough examination. He promotes using the most conservative treatments that prove effective for you.
He may recommend trying the following before suggesting surgery:
- Medications such as anti-inflammatory medications and muscle relaxant
- Hot/cold therapy
- Activity modification
- Physical therapy
- Chiropractic care
- Injection or nerve block therapy
If your symptoms do not improve with these less invasive treatments or your injury is severe, Dr. Remi Ajiboye may suggest minimally invasive spine surgery.
If you’re looking for a minimally invasive spine specialist in Torrance, El Segundo, South Bay or the greater Los Angeles area, contact Dr. Remi Ajiboye online or over the phone to set up an appointment.
